Loss Prevention Specialist (5/30/08)
ABM Industries Incorporated has an opening for a Loss Prevention Specialist. This is a FULL–TIME EXEMPT position.
Location: Position will work out of the Northeast Regional Office in New York City.
Job Summary Responsibilities:
- Continually conduct loss prevention (safety) inspections and job hazard assessments at work sites in Manhattan.
- Continually conduct employee safety training on topics including but not limited to manual material handling, slip/fall prevention, personal protective equipment, etc.
- Respond to injury, illness, and “near miss” incidents immediately. As necessary, conduct investigations and generate findings, including root cause analysis when appropriate.
- Routinely communicate information to the regional risk manager for employee contact and follow-up.
- Demonstrate ABM’s commitment to employee safety and loss prevention by continually meeting employees at their work sites and discussing ideas, concerns, etc.
- Administer the employee safety incentive program, including tracking of case data to document achievements against objectives.
- Create a monthly management report that tracks established leading and trailing indicators, as determined by senior management.
- Generate weekly and monthly activity reports.
- Respond to inquiries regarding compliance with ABM Occupational Safety and Environmental Management policy.
- Assist in the development, coordination, implementation, evaluation and enforcement of corporate, federal, state, and local regulations.
- Assist in the development of company/division/region safety policies and procedures, when requested.
- Report to the ABM Industries Incorporated VP of Safety Services.
Hours: This position typically will work 3:00pm to 11:00pm
Education/Training:
- A Bachelors degree in a relevant area (such as Safety Management, Human Resources Management, Biology, Kinesiology, Engineering or Toxicology) is required.
Job Knowledge/Experience:
- 2-5 years work experience desirable in (or closely affiliated with) Safety Management, Human Resources Management, or Training/Communications.
- Project management experience is desirable. Ability to prioritize and function in an occasionally stressful, multi-task environment.
- Customer-service oriented individual with excellent communication skills.
- 2 or more years experience in developing and publishing reports, articles, training materials, etc.
- Ability to efficiently use the internet as a toll for conducting research and extracting safety – related information.
- Expertise in the use of spreadsheet and word processing software.
- Basic understanding of occupational safety and health regulatory process.
- Demonstrated interest in developing or improving expertise in the field of occupational safety and health management.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills. Ability to communicate across organizational levels using various media.

This position is a one-year, full-time substitute (i.e. non-tenure track) faculty position. The position requires a combination of teaching and administrative responsibilities. The position will be at the Assistant or Associate Professor level, depending upon the degrees and experience of the candidate.

Duties:
This faculty member will be responsible for teaching graduate (and possibly undergraduate) courses across the urban public health/environmental and occupational health sciences curriculum, such as: environmental health and safety; air pollution; industrial ventilation, industrial hygiene laboratory, noise and radiation. Additional duties will include; student advisement; and participation on departmental college and university committees.
Qualifications:
Minimum Master’s Degree in public health, industrial hygiene, environmental health, environmental sciences or a related field. Doctoral degree preferred as well as college level teaching experience. Certification in industrial hygiene or safety is desirable..
Salary:
Assistant Professor: $39,000 - $67,000
Associate Professor: $50,000 - $77,000

Responsibilities
This position will provide leadership and technical support in the areas of: 

  • Direct industrial hygiene, safety, environmental and litigation support consulting activities;
  • Prepare proposals and bid documents in coordination with business development staff;
  • Conduct and/or oversee the completion of industrial hygiene surveys for noise, indoor air quality, mold, asbestos, lead, etc.;
  • Preparation and  review of site safety/work plans;

    Qualifications
  • US Citizen or permanent work status.
  • BS or MS degree in Industrial Hygiene, Public Health or related science field.
  • Must be certified by the American Board of Industrial Hygiene (ABIH) as a (CIH) Certified Industrial Hygienist.
  • Must be a Certified Asbestos Consultant (CAC) or have the ability to obtain CAC based on experience and similar certification in another state.
  • Experiences in consulting/manufacturing/industrial fields are highly desired.
  • Certification by the Board of Certified Safety Professionals as a Certified Safety Professional (CSP) is highly desired.

    Industrial Hygienist (CIH)
    The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey is a bistate public agency responsible for promoting transportation and commerce, operating some of the busiest and most important construction projects and transportation links in the region including bridges, tunnels, bus terminals, airports, PATH, AirTrain systems, and the NY/NJ seaport.
    We currently have an opening for a Certified Industrial Hygienist within our Operations Services Department servicing World Trade Center Construction which has overall program management responsibility for the Downtown Restoration Program (DRP), including the planning, design, and construction of new facilities at the WTC site such as the WTC Transportation Hub, Freedom Tower, and WTC Memorial.

    DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES As a seasoned and experienced Industrial Hygienist (CIH) you will be responsible for providing technical support and expertise for the World Trade Center Construction project in downtown Manhattan, NYC.  The individual will represent the Agency at external meetings, prepare and submit detailed reports thoroughly discussing results with an assessment of the current industrial hygiene procedures and personal protective equipment in place including: 

    • Making recommendations for changes in the work environment/procedures based on interpretations and principles of professional practice.

    • Responsible for evaluating and monitoring occupational safety, health and environmental conditions at the World Trade Center site

    • Identifying and characterizing potential chemical, biological and physical hazards

    • Establishing controls using instruments, reference information and experience.

    • Reviewing and interpreting applicable environmental and occupational safety and health regulations

    • Staying current on existing and proposed health and safety regulations while providing recommendations for changes to current policies based on new or revised regulations

    • Responsible for reviewing health and safety plans to ensure compliance with local, state and federal regulations and prepare memos with recommendations for improvement. 

    • Conduct occupational safety and environmental inspections of the World Trade Center worksite and prepare reports noting observations and recommendations for improvement. 

    • Perform Industrial Hygiene field measurements and reviews and interpret sampling results. 

    QUALIFICATIONS 
    • Candidates must have a Bachelors Degree from an accredited college or university and posses a current valid drivers license.  
    • The CIH must be currently certified and in good standing with the American Board of Industrial Hygiene.

    Qualifications and Other Selective Placement Factors
    General Experience: 
    A. Four years experience and education, which has provided the applicant with a broad knowledge of the theory and application of the principles of industrial hygiene and closely related sciences. Such work must have involved experience in ALL of the following areas: the acquisition of quantitative and qualitative data and the measurement of exposures for a variety of chemical, physical and biological stresses; the analysis of the data required and the prediction of probable effects of exposures on the health and well-being of workers; and the selection and recommendation of appropriate control, including management, medical, engineering, education or training, and personal protective equipment. 
    OR 
    B. Completion of a full 4 year course of study in an accredited college or university creditable towards a bachelor's or higher degree in industrial hygiene, or in a branch of engineering, physical science or life science. This study must have included, or have been supplemented by 12 semester hours of course work in chemistry, which included organic chemistry. An additional 18 semester hours in any combination of the following fields: chemistry, physics, engineering, health, biostatics, biology, physiology, toxicology, epidemiology, or industrial hygiene. 
    Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Candidates will be evaluated on the basis of the KSA(s) listed below. Applicants are encouraged to address the KSA(s) in their application or Resume or by submitting a supplemental statement with their application. Written response to each KSA will ensure that specialized experience criteria is recognized and credited. 
    1.      Knowledge of OSHA, AFOSH, EPA and other federal laws and related programs, and of DoD, USAF and ANG regulations, policies and procedures related to industrial hygiene, occupational health, and bioenvironmental engineering.
    2.      Knowledge of technical installation work processes/operations and equipment relative to their effect on the adjacent office area, etc.
    3.      Skill to perform a wide range of industrial hygiene duties, including survey, detection, evaluation and sampling/testing techniques and related control measures for a variety of potential workplace related health hazards.
    4.      Ability to isolate and identify a variety of chemical agents, physical agents, biological agents and ergonomic factors. 
    DUTIES: This position is located in the Medical Group at an Air National Guard Wing. The purpose of this position is to provide a professional Industrial Hygienist to plan, schedule, execute, manage, and administer the installation-wide Industrial Hygiene/Bioenvironmental Engineering Program (IH/BEE), which includes occupational health/industrial hygiene, radiation safety, and environmental monitoring to maintain and promote the health and well-being of military and technician personnel. Determines and assigns Risk Assessment Code (RAC) to health hazards. Reviews plans for new and existing facility construction projects. Performs other duties as assigned.
